Waiting for an end-of-sequence test is too late to discover that half the class misunderstood the first step. Formative assessment is the small evidence a teacher gathers during learning and uses to decide what to repeat, change or extend.
In a large class, use checks that involve everyone at once. Learners can show a number with fingers, hold up one of two response cards, write one answer on a small slate, complete an oral sentence with a partner or place an example under the correct heading on the board.
A quick check needs a precise question. Instead of asking whether everyone understands, give one task that represents the objective. Look for patterns in the answers: a common wrong answer often shows that the explanation or example needs to change.
Feedback can be brief and useful. Name what is correct, identify the next step and allow a second attempt. Marks are not required for every check; the purpose is to improve learning while the lesson can still be adjusted.
Record only what will help later. A simple class list with three symbols—secure, developing and needs support—can guide the next lesson or small-group activity without creating another heavy paperwork exercise.
A formative check should sample the exact thinking required by the objective. If learners must compare fractions, asking them to define numerator does not show whether they can compare. If the objective is oral communication, a copied written sentence provides incomplete evidence. Design one brief task that represents the intended skill, predict likely errors and decide what response will lead to reteaching, more practice or extension. This preparation makes the check useful rather than an activity added because time remains.
Response systems can be made with almost no cost. Folded paper can show A, B, C and D; bottle tops can represent yes and no; learner notebooks can display one calculation at the same time. The teacher should establish routines for holding answers only after a signal so children are not simply copying neighbours. Scan patterns across the class, then ask selected learners to explain reasoning. A correct response with a weak explanation and a wrong response based on a sensible method both provide valuable information.
Peer assessment needs criteria and boundaries. Learners may compare a short answer with an agreed model, check whether a sentence has a capital letter and full stop or use a two-point checklist during pair work. They should not assign high-stakes grades or publicly ridicule errors. The teacher remains responsible for interpreting evidence. Teaching learners to explain feedback politely—name one success and one next step—can improve both the work being reviewed and the reviewer’s understanding of quality.
Record-keeping should not recreate a second examination system. Choose priority learners or priority competencies and use quick symbols that have agreed meanings. A dated note such as ‘needs objects to subtract across ten’ is more useful than a vague mark of weak. Review records before planning the next lesson and remove support when it is no longer needed. Information that never influences instruction is paperwork rather than formative assessment.
The cycle ends with action. If most learners choose the same wrong answer, pause and model the idea differently. If a small group is confused, give the class independent practice while supporting that group. If nearly everyone is secure, move to an application or challenge rather than repeating the same explanation. Learners should experience that an initial mistake can lead to teaching and another attempt. This creates a classroom where assessment is evidence for progress, not only judgement after learning has ended.
Teachers can plan one key check in advance and leave space for another based on what happens. The planned check protects the objective; the responsive check follows learner thinking. At the end of the week, review which misunderstandings repeated across lessons. That pattern may point to missing prerequisite knowledge or an explanation that needs redesign. Formative assessment becomes sustainable when it is short, connected to action and built into teaching rather than added as another separate administrative burden.
