1884: Germany declared a protectorate over Cameroon. 1 January 1960: the Republic of Cameroon became independent. 1 October 1961: Southern Cameroons joined the Republic of Cameroon and the Federal Republic of Cameroon was formed. 20 May 1972: a referendum led to the United Republic of Cameroon.
