Testing water drainage in local soils

Compare how quickly water passes through sandy, clay-rich and humus-rich soil samples.

Science & TechnologyPractical investigation

Question and prediction

Which soil sample will allow water to pass through fastest? Learners observe the samples and write a reasoned prediction before testing.

Fair test

Place equal amounts of each soil in separate pierced containers. Pour the same volume of water into each. Collect and compare the water after the same amount of time. Wash hands after handling soil.

Record and conclude

Create a table with soil type, prediction, amount collected and observation. State which drained fastest and explain how keeping amounts and time equal made the comparison fair.
